Sunrise Tour in Mount Bromo | All You Need to Know to Plan Your Visit

Indonesia is well-known for its active volcanoes. One of the most epic adventures in this area is the journey to see the sunrise at Mount Bromo in the island of Java.

When we were planning our trip, we found that there is not much information about the sunrise tours in Mount Bromo. Our complete guide tells you all you need to know so you can decide which option is best for you! Read on for more information!

Where is Mount Bromo?

Mount Bromo is located on the eastern region of Java in Indonesia. Java is the island west of Bali, and best known for the temples in the city of Yogyakarta. There are easy flight connections to many cities in Asia. You can also reach the island via ferry from Bali.

  • Other airports | Yogyakarta and Jakarta
  • Closest train stations | Surabaya and Probolinggo

How to get to Mount Bromo

If you would like to visit the volcano as a day trip, you can do so from Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo.

  • If you are starting in Yogyakarta, there are trains from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, Probolinggo and Malang. As an alternative, you can fly from Yogyakarta to Surabaya.
  • If you are starting in Jakarta, there is a train from Jakarta to Surabaya, or you can fly between the two cities.

Although the train takes from 5 to 8 hours depending on the train you take and the destination, the scenery is absolutely amazing! And the seats are very comfortable. So bring some snacks and just sit down and relax! Driving can take much longer and may not be as comfortable as the train.

If you prefer to spend some time in the area to enjoy the mountain views once all the day tourists are gone, the town of Cemoro Lawang might be an option for you. There are very few hotels to choose from, and they range from very basic inexpensive hostels to luxury properties, so book early to get your choice.

  • The closest train station to Cemoro Lawang is in Probolinggo. To transfer to your hotel, the options are a local bus, taxi or prearranged transfer. Searching for more information in travel forums, you will find multiple reports of difficulties getting from the train station to the bus station, so read up on that when planning your trip.

Sunrise Mount Bromo tours

Most people visit Mount Bromo for the spectacular sunrise view. To get there for sunrise there are two main options:

  • Jeep tour
  • Hike to one of the viewpoints in Cemoro Lawang

The jeep tours run as private tours. Most of them include the entrance fee to the park, coffee break, breakfast, transfer to the mountain, guide and jeep tour. We found that most companies had similar prices (about $65 USD per passenger in a group of 4), so we chose one with the best reviews.

When I was preparing for this trip, the only information I could find was regarding the hike. This involves staying in one of the hotels in Cemoro Lawang and starting the 2 hour hike in the dark. There’s mention of how difficult it is, of how you are stumbling in the dark, but how at the end is worth it (you know, the typical blogger post!). But no specifics or even pictures. So without any real information about the safety or the logistics of the route, I decided to take the jeep tour instead. Therefore, I cannot comment on the hike itself, and will suggest you to find info online.

So how to choose where to start? Ultimately, this depends on how you are reaching Java, and how much resting time you need before your early morning pick up.

For example, we where starting from Yogyakarta, so we decided to take the 10 am train to Surabaya, getting there a little after 3 pm. That gave us time to have an early dinner, shower and a quick nap before the midnight pick up. We slept all the way to the mountain, so we had an extra 3 hours of sleep.

Where to stay in Surabaya | JW Marriott Surabaya, one of the most luxurious hotels in Surabaya, and at a very affordable rate! So worth it, even if we only used it for a few hours!

Transportation within Surabaya | Taxi from train station to hotel. Walk to a nearby restaurant.

What to expect

After reaching the mountain, you will transfer to a jeep. Seating is at the back of the jeep with the seats facing each other (so you are not facing the front). The space is kind of tight, so there is space for only 4 people in the back. Your guide will seat in the front with the driver.

The sunrise tour is soooo popular, that you will be stuck in traffic going up and down the mountain. Seriously, it is incredible to see all the jeeps lining up the narrow roads. And it is so dark that you only see the headlights!

Traffic jam!

The jeep drivers want to get to the top of the mountain as soon as possible, so they drive fast and break way too close to the jeep in front. We were starting to get a little nervous, so our guide asked the driver to slow down a bit, which he did. So it was one of those scary-fun rides were you question your life choices!

Once you reach the viewpoint, your guide takes you to one of the shops for a coffee break. You can choose from black coffee or tea. For snacks, there is a selection of traditional soya treats (think rice cakes but made with soya) and fried bananas. If you are a picky eater, I recommend you bring your own snacks.

Coffee break time!

It is about 4 am now, so it will be pretty cold up in the mountain, even in the summer. Bring something warm to wear, like a hoodie and a hat. Some of the shops sell and rent jackets and hats in case you forget yours (cash only).

The town is still sleeping…

As sunrise time approaches, you will walk to the viewpoint. Walk as far down as you can for the best views of the volcano. This area is paved and has railings, so no hiking needed.

Amazing view of Mount Bromo at sunrise.

After sunrise, be ready to be stuck in traffic, so use the restroom before getting back on the jeep! The driver takes you down to the base of Mount Bromo and the Whispering Sands. The black sand is all volcanic ash, pretty cool! Here you have time for some photos with the jeeps and the volcanoes in the background. Look adventurous!

All you need is a 4WD and some sense of adventure!

Finally, you will reach the base of the crater and the Luhur temple. If conditions at the volcano permit, you can climb up the steps to the crater. The volcano was erupting while we where there, so no one was allowed near the crater.

At the base of the crater.

Once you are done exploring, you will have breakfast in one of the hotels in the area. As usual in this region, the buffet choices range from rice and noodles to scrambled eggs and toast. I for one got used to having rice in the morning!

The view from the Lava View hotel.

You will then transfer back to the van and start your journey back to your pick up location. And so your day in Mount Bromo will come to an end.

So, is it all worth it? Yes, it takes a lot to plan this day, but the views are simply magnificent! You will not see anything like this in all of your travels. Every time you look at your pictures you will remember this day with a smile. I sure do.
